This means you’re either moving forwards, or moving backwards. You have to choose which it’s going to be.”</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;">This week I attended a coaches’ panel discussion at the local university in which three very successful NAIA coaches answered questions from the class - made up of mostly student-athletes - about the mental side of sports. The quote above is from the Head Coach of the softball team, a program that has won 4 NAIA national championsips in the past 6 seasons in which the tournament was played (there was no tournament in 2020). </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;">A very impressive resume with a lot of winning, and yet her answers (you’re about to be so surprised) were entirely about the process of growth and collaboration, and a commitment to building strong relationships.  She spoke of setting clear standards and empowering her players to meet them; she emphasized seeking joy in each moment, and made clear a willingness to have hard conversations in a space of shared purpose, compassion, support, and mutual respect. Winning, she said, is really damn hard, and is a byproduct of the work and intention that athletes and coaches put in each day, approaching every choice with the attention and gravity of a championship game. </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;">Needless to say, I was impressed and intrigued; I will also admit to feeling a little bit validated, given that this Winner with a capital W was basically talking about the same things upon which a lot of my work is based, including the topic of today’s long blog: the ABCs of intrinsic motivation (Autonomy, Belonging, and Competence) which undoubtedly contribute to SOU Softball’s success. Since the panel, I’ve been thinking about motivation, especially how to support it through intentional direction and motion towards something meaningful. </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;">For most of us, it’s pretty easy and intuitive to identify what we DON’T want, what we want to avoid - what we want to move away from. But if Coach is right (she is) and we’re moving no matter what, doesn’t it make more sense to choose something to move TOWARDS? Rather than trying to avoid [losing, heartbreak, failure, pain], what if we chose to move towards [growth, success, learning, love, challenges, difficult conversations] with intention and attention? That doesn’t mean it’s all going to be roses along the way, it just gives a person forward motion; once we’re moving, whatever comes up gives us the opportunity to choose and stay connected to that overall forward trajectory.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;">Today’s essay (below) speaks to the importance of that ability to choose. It is a theory of motivation that<em> </em>tells us that, in order to feel intrinsically motivated – driven by factors inherently meaningful to them, unaffected by external factors, opinions, or expectations – a person needs to have fulfilled three important psychological needs. They are the ABCs of intrinsic motivation: <em>Autonomy, Belonging, </em>and <em>Competence.</em> I’m going to introduce them in reverse order.</p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:1rem;" class=""><strong>Competence: “I have the skills to succeed in this space.”</strong></p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:1rem;" class="">Coaches and parents, workplace trainers and teachers, tend to focus heavily on teaching the skills required to perform a task. That skillset, whatever it is, is the foundation of <em>competence. </em>Often, we focus on physical and technical skills because they’re the most visible and easiest to understand. For most of us, it is more intuitive and easier to teach this relatively linear process: If there is a skill that someone needs that they don’t possess, I can show them how to do it and they can then learn and eventually master it through practice. We understand this type of skill acquisition; this understanding is a big factor in our obsession with “talent,” in sports and other arenas. </p><p style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:Palatino, Palladio, Baskerville, 'Nimbus Roman No9 L', Garamond, 'Century Schoolbook', serif;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:1rem;" class="">We can <em>see</em> competence, and its pursuit is what that forms the basis of most recruiting, analysis, NIL and other sponsorship, and absurdly large contracts in sports. And, competence is unquestionably a good thing; if I know that I possess the skills to get something done, my confidence and motivation to do it are higher and I am more likely to say yes to the task. In sport, we often mistake <em>inviting someone into OUR thing to do it our way</em> for inclusion. Through this process, you create relatability and help them feel heard, seen, understood, and valued. When a person feels like they belong, like “these are my people,” they are much more willing to exert or stretch themselves in service of whatever our shared purpose might be.
